Painting a bedroom dark blue is an austere choice, but balancing it with white and gold can give it an unorthodox serenity.

Aprendiendo Juntos Supports Parents, Grandparents, at Family Resource Centers

Aprendiendo Juntos/Learning Together is a program that is part of the Cesar Chavez Family Resource Center's (FRC) many parenting programs. Alma, a caregiver to her young grandson, was part of Aprendiendo Juntos and found that her parenting knowledge quickly increased as her time in the program progressed. During discussions with other parents and caregivers, Alma spoke openly about her parenting and caregiving experiences, often inspiring others to follow her lead.

Ryan, Alma's grandson attended the program with her. When he began the program, he was nonverbal and found it difficult to socialize and play with other children; however, by the end of the program, Ryan was more verbal, talkative, and was often found playing with other children at the FRC and in his neighborhood.

Alma and her grandson have moved on to new workshops and experiences following the end of Aprendiendo Juntos. Alma has since lead a Bridge to Kinder program, a 3-week school readiness workshop for incoming kindergartners.

"My grandson is more talkative and playful than he has ever been! He will continue coming to the FRC as he attends and learns in La Esculita, an early childhood education program. I can't wait to see how much he learns and grows over the next few months!"

- Alma, grandparent

SVCN, FIRST 5 Hosts Board of Supervisors Candidate Forum

On Friday, October 12, FIRST 5 hosted an Early Education Candidate Forum in partnership with the Silicon Valley Council of Nonprofits. Susan Ellenberg, San Jose Unified School District Trustee, and Don Rocha, San Jose City Councilmember, are both vying to fill County Supervisor Ken Yeager seat in the upcoming November election.

Co-sponsored by the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, Santa Clara County Office of Education, Healthier Kids Foundation, and Strong Start, the forum focused on the importance of high-quality early education, health, and childcare.

The two candidates offered their thoughts about the county's role of early childhood education, what their contribution to the early childhood education sector would be if elected, and how they would ensure that early childhood education remains a priority to lawmakers and to the county.
