How much does the Kit cost?
Not one cent. Although the Kit has a retail value of $75, First 5 California provides it to Californians for free so that all parents have access to the information and resources they need to best prepare for their new baby.
When did First 5 California develop the Kit for New Parents?
First 5 California launched its groundbreaking parent education campaign in 2001 to provide answers to the myriad of questions expecting and new parents may have. Since the program’s inception, nearly 2.5 million Kits for New Parents have been distributed across California.
What is included in the updated Kit?
The Kit is a comprehensive guide filled with advice and useful tips for first-time parents. A central element of the Kit is an educational DVD with parenting advice from prominent child development experts and celebrities, such as talk show host Cristina Saralegui, actors Rob Reiner, Phylicia Rashad, Jamie Lee Curtis, Andy Garcia and singer Gloria Estefan.
Also included in the briefcase-style box are easy-to-read parenting guides like “Advice for New Parents” and “What To Do When Your Child Gets Sick,” as well as “Puppy and Friends,” a tactile storybook for parents and children to enjoy together. Other resources include brochures on topics ranging from oral health to obesity prevention, a poison control magnet, information on Healthy Families low-cost medical care, and more!
How does the new Kit differ from the original?
The Kit has been completely revised and updated to include the latest early childhood development information, new content, user-friendly improvements, a fresh look, and technological upgrades, such a single DVD replacing seven VHS tapes.
Will the new Kit be available in other languages?
The Kit is available in Spanish and will be available in Asian languages later this year.
